Meet USTA Professional member

Jason Lee

USTA's own, Jason Lee, has seen the sport from many viewpoints. His wealth of knowledge and experience makes him one of the sport's most dynamic personalities. INSIDE LOOP asked him about his “baton life” and here's what he had to say.

Inside Loop: As an athlete, world champion, Master Judge, world media commentator and USTA board member, you've seen the sport from all sides! What advice would you give to a baton enthusiast wishing to follow your path?

Lee: I've been incredibly lucky to participate in this sport in different roles--I never take that for granted. My two pieces of advice are, first, "be open to saying yes." There are lots of different ways to help out as a Professional member, and I encourage folks to say "yes" when asked to take part in various activities, especially if it's something you haven't done before or something you never envisioned yourself doing. Just like a new flip or roll, go ahead and give it a try! Second, "don't be afraid to make a big ask." Our sport is also a community, and if you need or want something--advice, a recommendation, a call on your behalf, etc.--ask someone for it. No one gets where they are by walking alone. We all help each other along the way!

Inside Loop: Has baton twirling had a positive impact on your career as an attorney with the Department of Justice? If so, how?

Lee: It has! I think the biggest skill twirling taught me is how to persevere. I know there are many things--in twirling and outside of twirling--that I will not naturally be good at. That's fine. But if it's something I really want to do, I'll work until I figure it out. In other words, in twirling and in life, you only get what you're willing to put in.

Inside Loop: Tell us three things about yourself that the baton world might not know about you!

Inside Loop: Tell us three things about you that the twirling world probably doesn't know.

Lee: Since retiring, I've transitioned to playing tennis (and it's been fun being a beginner in a sport again). Three of my favorite movies are "Sister Act," "Mean Girls," and "Bridesmaids." And I have a "black thumb" (I cannot seem to keep my plants alive!).
