Getting to know USTA Professional member Courtney White( Wed, Feb 10 00:02:AM)

“Getting to know you……… getting to know all about you.”

Courtney White is a new USTA Professional member with a strong background in twirling and dance. She recently talked with USTA's Inside Loop about the exciting opportunties she's had in both disciplines. Here's what she had to say:

Inside Loop: As a relatively new USTA Professional, can you tell us a little bit about your baton history and career?

White: I grew up in Richmond, Virginia competing individually and on teams for 15 years. My favorite events were duet and rhythmic twirl, and I won national titles in both. In college, I twirled with the Wolfpack Majorettes as a Feature Twirler for North Carolina State University. Twirling in college was certainly the highlight of my career. I now serve as the Wolfpack Majorette Recruiter, Alumni Coordinator and assistant coach. GO PACK!

For the past 12 years, I have taught throughout the U.S. as a freelance choreographer to many struts, rhythmics, freestyles, artistic pairs, artistic twirls and college tryout routines. In 2016 I had the privilege of teaching in Vichy,France at the NBTA France summer camp with many distinguished coaches from USTA and NBTA.

I currently work with Colleen Murphy as a co-choreographer for the Forté Artistic Group; a team and program that I hold near and dear to my heart. It has been an honor to work alongside Colleen and these young athletes. I am grateful to USTA and their continued efforts to educate and promote baton twirling at the highest level. I’m excited
to be a part of an organization that supports their athletes, judges, coaches and parents.

A fun fact about my twirling endeavors…I auditioned for Cirque De Sole with Jen Marcus Swartz and Chelsea Russell Potter back when we were teenagers! It was the longest audition EVER, but we had a lot of fun, a lot of laughs and we made it to the very end. It was so cool following Jen on her journey as a performer with the company.

Inside Loop: We know that you are truly an accomplished dancer, as well, with many dance laurels to your credit. Tell us about those.

White: Dance has always been a part of my life. I have been fortunate to make it my career. After graduating from Meredith College with a BA in Dance concentrating in performance and choreography I worked as a dancer (and twirler) for the Walt Disney World Company in Orlando, Florida. I dreamed of being a performer, but found the lifestyle unsustainable. I wanted to keep dancing but also make a living. I love learning and the rigor of higher education, so I attended The University of North Carolina Greensboro and earned an MFA in choreography. Since then my work has been presented throughout the Mid-Atlantic and Southeast. I have served as a guest artist at The University of North Carolina Greensboro, James Madison University, The University of Memphis, Dogwood Dance Project, and various middle and high schools in North Carolina. In 2017 I received a Distinguished Teacher travel grant to attend and present at the International Dance Studies Association (DSA) conference in Columbus, Ohio.

I currently work as an adjunct professor for Meredith College and Coastal Carolina University (thanks to Zoom). I hope to become a full-time professor in the next few years. In addition to working in higher education, I am on the faculty at The Ballet School of Chapel Hill, NC; the Director of Dance for the Carolina Preserve Dance Company;
and recently co-founded Silver Shuffles, LLC, a dance company specializing in movement and fitness classes for adults 55+.

I still perform, occasionally, with my colleagues and other local artists. I have been the rehearsal director for the Carol Finley Dance Group for ten years now. Performing brings me so much joy, but teaching brings me more. My favorite place to be is in the studio; creating, imagining, rehearsing, sweating. As an educator, I love helping students and athletes alike, explore the functionality of the body and the endless possibilities that dance and movement can have.

Inside Loop: What are 3 things the baton twirling world would not know about you?

White: My favorite band is Queen. My cousins and I were on the Family Feud. (Steve Harvey and I twirled together on the episode.) I live in Raleigh, North Carolina with my sweet husband Bobby and our cat Fenway.
